By Anchen Engelbrecht

Drumming offers many benefits, extending beyond a creative outlet. Drumming can have a positive impact on a child’s overall well-being.

Many studies have been done on the impact of drumming on learners who have learning disabilities, ADHD, and other barriers. These studies found that most learners benefited greatly from these lessons. The learners showed improvements in many aspects including social behaviour, academic performance, and their emotional well-being.

A study done by The British Society of Developmental Disabilities stated that:

Drumming enhances motor- and psychosocial- skills of children with emotional and behavioural difficulties. In follow-up interviews, staff spoke positively about changes in pupils' attitudes toward learning and social confidence.

Benefits of drumming:

1.  Cognitive development:

It has been proven to help learners with timing and rhythm. It lengthens the time they can stay concentrated on work, and it helps learners improve their problem-solving skills.

2. Physical development:

Learners who receive drumming lessons often benefit from enhanced motor skills. Drumming focuses on finer hand movements which is known to strengthen the muscles in your hands and fingers. It will also improve balance and posture.

3.  Emotional well-being:

Drumming is a creative way to explore your talents. Drumming has a positive effect on learners who has anxiety and stress. It also gives learners a boost of confidence.

4.  Social skills:

Communication skills can be improved during drumming lessons, as well as listening skills. It is also a great way to promote teamwork and build friendships.

Drumming is not just a fun activity to pass the time, it can hold many benefits for developing children.
